Trans-en-Provence — Class D physical-trace case

43.4937°N · 6.4865°E · CLASS CE2 · EPOCH 1981-01
DATE
Jan 08, 1981
LOCATION
Trans-en-Provence, Var, France
WITNESSES

DURATION
~30 sec

Renato Nicolaï observed a disc-shaped object (~2.5m diameter) descend, land briefly on a terrace in his garden, then ascend and depart. Investigators (GEPAN, GEIPAN's predecessor) recovered soil samples showing physical changes — compaction, heating signatures, and biochemical alterations to surrounding plants persisting for weeks. INRA / French CNRS laboratory analysis reported alterations to plant chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments consistent with a localized energetic event. Classified D (unexplained) by GEIPAN. The most rigorously studied UAP case in French government records.
