Starting in late 1981, residents of Hessdalen Valley began reporting bright, white or yellow-white lights floating above the valley floor up to 20 times per week. The lights change direction, stop and start, and move in ways inconsistent with any conventional explanation. Project Hessdalen (1983–84) documented 188 observations in 540 hours of monitoring; cameras, radar, spectrum analyzers, and seismographs all recorded anomalies. The phenomenon continues to occur. No conventional explanation has been agreed upon by scientists.
