USAF F-94C Starfire scrambled from Griffiss AFB to intercept unknown radar target over Rome, NY. The pilot and radar operator reported a "brilliant light" that suddenly filled the cockpit and caused an intense heat. The pilots experienced loss of consciousness; both ejected. The unmanned aircraft crashed into Walesville, killing four civilians. The incident was covered in local press but Blue Book classified the radar contact; the crash officially attributed to mechanical failure.
